2005 South Africa – Sun City

We headed off early for the two-hour drive to Sun City, a large luxury resort and casino in the Northwest Province. Despite its glowing reputation, there was not enough lockers but Laura was brilliant at making things happen and after a short argument with the manager some lockers and some inflatable doughnuts for the water ride magically appeared. We changed into our swimwear and started at the Lazy River where we sat on our doughnuts and drifted slowly along the water through various man-made and not-very-convincing caves.

We then took turns in whooshing down the water chutes which was great fun. There was a body slide in total darkness which David and I boycotted but Federika and Laura had to be dragged away from it they enjoyed it so much. Next was the giant pool where everyone paddled around gently until a mini tsunami was generated which crashed everyone together causing a lot of screaming and laughing. It was great fun and we spent over an hour in there.

After an early dinner at the country club overlooking the golf course, we made our way home playing Name that Tune where David played music while we had to guess what the tune was from the intro. I am afraid no one else got a look in as that was part of my job as a freelance musician. At most gigs, the keyboard player played just a few notes and the rest of the band knew instantly what the song was without being told and started playing along. I even got the Issac Heyes version of The Look of Love in one bar. It was a great playlist which we all sang along to making it the perfect end to a great day. I will never hear the song Afternoon Delight without thinking of that journey.
